Well, if you saw my post a couple months ago about the new job, there is an update. It didn't work out. The kind of work the business did was just out of my skill level.

But! I start a new job tomorrow! I am starting a part-time job as a lot attendant at a local Ford dealer. I'll be washing cars, etc. On top of that, I could also work as a service porter, working to prep the cars for sale by tagging the keys, putting in seat covers, etc. I will also probably be doing some basic work in the garage to start.

While it may not sound like the most glorious, I am more than excited. The service manager really seemed to like me. He told me that he would have given me a shot as a technician right away, if he had an opening. He gave me the advice of taking the attendant job, as it's an excellent way to get my foot in the door. There were others looking for one of the two open attendant positions, but I didn't even make it home before he called to tell em I had gotten the job.

While he made no promises in stone, the manager told me he could definitely see a future for me with Ford. I couldn't be more excited.

That's some good news. Everyone has to start somewhere. And if you prove your worth, I'm sure they'll find reasons to keep you on board and more stuff to do. Congrats!

Nice man. I started as a porter when I was looking to be a tech. Work your ass off and prove that you can handle your self. When a lube tech position opens up try and take it then work your way on up from there. Ford isn't a bad car company to be a tech for, just try and get your service manager to get you enrolled in the stars program if being a tech is where you want to go.

You're welcome. I went through the ASSET program and finished up at the great collapse of the economy in '08 and couldn't find a job after all the dealers closed down.

Make friends with the techs and if you have down time and they are willing to teach you anything just soak it up. You learn more in the shop working than in a classroom. If I could do it all over again, I'd have just stayed as an apprentice and never would have went through the ASSET program because it really set me back now that I'm trying to get my BS in chemistry, but if you want to have a career as a tech learn as much as you can and listen to the old dudes they are the best.
